Inspired by Ksawery czyli troche ekstremalnej pogody po angielsku!

Witam wszystkich słówko-pożeraczy!

Jak mija wam upojny weekend z Ksawerym? Oczywiście mam na myśli szalejący wokół nas „orkan” (cóż za piękne nowe słówko w naszym rodzimym słowniku!). Może lepiej nie zadzierać z Ksawerym- nie wyściubiać nosa za drzwi, zrobić sobie grzańca, popcorn i obejrzeć parę dobrych filmów…. No można tez zajrzeć na naszego bloga i pożreć parę angielskich słówek. A skoro w ten weekend trafił nam się orkan to proponuje przyswoić sobie słownictwo określające inne, też ekstremalne, zjawiska pogodowe lub klęski żywiołowe. Oczywiście nie chcę tu wywołać wilka z lasu i wyrażam nadzieję, że zjawiska te nie nawiedzą naszego pięknego kraju!

WIND:

hurricane– huragan, orkan

Half of the buildings on the island were flattened by the hurricane.

cyclone/ hurricane– cyklon

tornado/ twister– tornado

The tornado picked up everything in its path, including animals and cars.

gale– wichura, wicher

COLD weather:

blizzard– zamieć śnieżna

The airplane couldn’t take-off because of the blizzard.

snowstorm– śnieżyca

All of the schools were closed because of the snowstorm.

hailstorm– burza z gradem

frost– mróz

(siarczysty mróz: biting cold, a sharp frost; tęgi mróz: a hard frost; wielkie mrozy: a big freeze)

HOT weather:

heat– upał

heatwave– fala upałów, upały

boiling hot day– upalny, skwarny dzień

It was boiling hot, so we all jumped into the lake.

thunderstorm- burza (z piorunami)

Let’s close all of the windows. It looks like a thunderstorm is coming

drought– susza

fire– pożar

Forest fires are a serious danger during a drought.

RAIN:

downpour– ulewa

drizzle– mżawka

I think I’ll take the dog for a walk. It’s only drizzling now.

showers– przelotne opady

They’ve been calling for showers all week, but so far it’s been dry.

flood– powódź

The flood was so bad, our basement was full of water.

fog– mgła

We couldn’t see the bridge because there was too much fog.

OTHERS:

earthquake– trzęsienie ziemi

tsunami– tsunami

volcano eruption– wybuch wulkanu

avalanche– lawina

The skiers were warned about a possible avalanche.
